I haven't decided on my final working title yet, but i have several ideas that will help me decide, these ideas include:vague, fusion noise, babble, protest, smash and clang. I thought of these words as they all give connotations of sound, and also to the genre of my magazine (rock/punk).
I looked at the demographic of genre firstly, i was surprised whilst doing my research that there are not many music magazines for female, the majority aim at men. So i have decided to aim my magazine at female, and to based the magazine on the rock/punk genre as i think there is a large gap in the market for that genre for the female genre. As popular music magazines with the rock/punk genre all target men (for example kerrang, and NME). I have decided to target people aged 16-20 as i think that people of this age are very interested in the music market and like to know what is happening in the music industry, also the people of this age have more free time than older people(who will work etc) and they will have more time to read the magazine.
When looking at the psychographic for my music magazine i looked on the website 'uktribes.com'. I have found various 'tribes' that i think would be interested in my magazine. Here are some examples:
- 'Scene Kids' http://www.uktribes.com/?p=article&id=15&article=194
- 'Young Alts' http://www.uktribes.com/?p=article&id=30&article=248
-'Trendies' http://www.uktribes.com/?p=article&id=1&article=180
-'Indie scenesters' http://www.uktribes.com/?p=article&id=7&article=185
Even though there are alot of 'tribes' here i think each 'tribe' would be interested in my music magazine. Every magazine attracts similar but at the same different types of people to it. Similar to how different stereotypes enjoy listening to the same music. All of the 'tribes' i have chosen all like to be up to date with the music/fashion industry and are usually ahead of the game, for example when music the indie scenesters listen to goes mainsteam they 'bin it' as they like to be individual and different.
Furthermore, i will price my magazine cheaper than the big music magazine brands like Kerrang and NME because my magazine will not be well established when it first comes out and needs to be able to compete with the bigger brand names. So by pricing it slightly cheaper will allow me to appeal to my target audience (16-20 year olds) who may not have a lot of money spare anyway because of further education costs. My magazine will be around the price of £2.20, cheaper than the big brands (eg Kerrang magazine is £2.80). This will mean there will be a higher demand for my product as it is cheaper than the other competing magazines and therefore i should be able to get a higher profit. Plus, my magazine will be produced monthly as i don't think i will make a profit by producing one weekly because mine will not be well established and therefore will not be able to compete with the established brands. Also my target audience will not have lots of money spare to buy a magazine weekly, and are more likely to buy one monthly.
The content of my magazine will be similar to 'SPIN' the music magazine , as it focuses on new things happening in the music genre, and reviews and interviews of bands/artists. Unlike 'SPIN' i will include not so famous bands to interest my target audience as i found that they are interested in niche bands that are not as popular, i will also target rock/punk fans, slightly different to 'SPIN' as i believe 'SPIN' targets people who enjoy alternate rock and pop. Similarly to 'SPIN' i will be targeting majority female audience, i will do this by appealing to the feminine side by including things like fashion pages and male bands.
Ideally the style of my magazine will also be similar to spin, just focusing on a different genre (rock/punk) also my style will be similar to 'INTUNE' which also has the majority of its audience as females. I will have a large title that is easily recognisable, a female/females as the model/models, dressed in fashionable clothing, perhaps slightly rocky to link back to the genre, also this will enable the viewers to relate to the models and therefore are more likely to pick the magazine up from the shelf.
I do not think there is a big market for female music magazines with the genre of rock/punk so the unique selling point of my magazine is that i will be targeting a completely different audience to any other music magazine and therefore this unique selling point will enable me to sell more magazines.
